Chapter 11: Bow Valley College's Essential Skills Initiative

Bow Valley's President, Sharon Carry, describes Bow Valley College as " . . . creating new pathways to lifelong learning for busy, working adults, whether we reach them in Calgary, rural Alberta, or over the internet. The College has a wide range of course offerings available for study in the classroom or at home. In addition to full-time studies, some of our programs can be taken on a part-time basis, days, evenings, or weekends."

Bow Valley College has over 14,400 students and 589 faculty and staff. Bow Valley is a leader in Essential Skills initiatives. 

Bow Valley College is well-known across Canada as the home of TOWES (Test of Workplace Essential Skills). TOWES is effective testing and training that uses workplace documents to accurately measure the three essential skills that are needed for safe and productive employment: Reading Text, Document Use, and Numeracy.
