Resources

These are additional description and background information on the scenarios offered throughout this course.

Video 1: Tyrone’s Dilemma: Communication, Problem Solving and Decision making in the Workplace

At work, just like in other areas of life, solving problems, making good decisions and communicating well are valuable skills.  “Tyrone’s Dilemma,” presents a closer look at these skills to show why they are so important in the workplace.

"Tyrone's Dilemma" presents a scenario that is familiar to most people - the conflict between expectations and performance in the workplace.  Tyrone is a young and inexperienced attendant at a busy restaurant and take-out counter who must use problem solving and oral communication skills to deal with a difficult workplace situation involving a customer with a demand for service.

Video 2: Elma the Science Temp: Continuous Learning in the Workplace

“Elma the Science Temp,” demonstrates why Continuous Learning is an important workplace skill. Elma, a temporary employee in a lab, is required to learn on the job to convince a skeptical supervisor that she has the right skills to become permanent in the position.

Elma works well with the entire lab team. She contributes to the team by sharing what she knows and asks good questions to learn what she needs to know about the job. Everyone values Elma for her hard work and enthusiasm. She contributes to group activities and is an active part of the lab team. Will she convince Mr. Frank that she is right for the job?

Video 3: Quiet on the Set: The Skills of Communication and Working with Others

“Quiet on Set,” demonstrates two workplace skills:  Communication and Working with Others. In the workplace, as in other areas of life, the ability to work with others and communicate well are valuable skills.  This video presents a scenario that is familiar to most people – a stressful workplace situation and the importance of being able to work respectfully and cooperatively with others to meet deadlines.

The location is the set of a popular daytime television soap opera, “Passionate Flame of the Heart.” The scenario begins with a crew who are making a behind the scenes documentary of the show. Producing a show involves a large crew and cast and a lot of expensive equipment. This makes it very important to work well together in order to stay on schedule. The ability to contribute to and work as part of a team is an essential quality in the film industry, as it is in most workplaces.
