Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction to the GENEST Course

Are the attitudes and behaviors of one generation different from another? What do you think?

If so, are these perceptions based on fact or are they assumptions we make about each other? There is a lot written about the differences between generations but when you ask people to confirm if they see themselves this way, they become defensive. Who wouldn’t because it’s a stereotype!

The Centre for Education and Work discovered there are no distinct differences between one generation and the next. Individuals have preferences in how they respond to the world around them that may or may not fit with others in their generation. We need to be aware of how we perceive others and find out if we are accurate. If we leave these perceptions unchecked, we will become frustrated and continue to misunderstand and make assumptions about others.

This is a resource that will give you specific strategies to overcome generational barriers relating to the Essential Skills you use every day on the job.

Who are the 4 generations? How are they described?

Shifting our Perception of Others

There has been a lot written on the characteristics and behaviors of the different generations. Lets take a moment to name the stereotypes associated with each generation.

For example:

Gen X are competitive

Gen Y has a sense of entitlement

Veterans are strong leaders not open to change

Boomers are workaholics

The group explores generational perceptions

Moving past our Perceptions: the GENEST Tool

To move past our perceptions of other generations, we need to listen and ask questions.

The CEW has compiled a list of questions in the form of an assessment to help organizations identify similarities and differences between individuals. This assessment will give working teams a transparent and authentic picture of their workplace. This picture will allow them to identify their strengths and overcome their barriers.

Register through CEW to do the GENEST Assessment Tool

This tool will help your team to learn about individual similarities and differences in terms of:

Learning
Team Building
Conflict Resolution
Communication
Leadership
Change Managment
Workplace Culture/Diversity
Giving and Receiving Feedback

A summary of the assessments and a comparison chart are available on line upon completion. At a glance the comparison chart will allow individuals to identify similarities and differences they have with others in their working team. For example, they will know John prefers to explore new ideas randomly while Barb likes to have a clear plan and purpose.

When we know the individual differences present on our team, we can work together to overcome any barriers faced.

The chapters in this course will provide strategies to overcome these barriers. You can work through each of these chapters in sequence or simply select the chapters that pertain to the priorities of your team.

Values and beliefs play such a key role in the people are and the personal code of ethics we follow. When people diagree with others it often feels like a personal attack. Aiding in greater understanding is definately important from all sides of the relationship.
